AbstractThe wavelet multi-resolution analysis and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) were applied to the Amazon River plume area time series to identify dominant scales or range of scales present in this feature variability. The time series was extracted from Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data for the period from 2000 to 2004. The results show that the plume area has a strong seasonal and annual variability signal. Previous studies showed that this seasonality is related to the cyclic variability of the Amazon River discharge. Another strong bi-annual signal was identified but any further association with the plume variability is limited by the relatively short period of the time series. Another relatively weeker 25 months signal was also detected and this could be related with the wind field and ocean currents variability influence over the Amazon River plume.
